executive function: what is it?
Executive Functioning skills are some of the MOST important brain skills a human develops because learning cannot occur, in any domain or subject area, unless these skills have been developed. Critical skills, like working memory, focus, metacognition, flexibility, organization, planning, problem solving and perseverance are at the core of all learning. When students struggle to develop in these areas, doing simple tasks can seem almost impossible. Academic tasks are overwhelming because they require more than just understanding content. Managing the workloads, deadlines and the stress of balancing multiple classes is enough to cause meltdowns, behavioral outbursts and avoidant tendencies.
Children with executive functioning challenges are more likely to struggle behaviorally because there is a higher level of frustration, self-confidence is affected and they might lack the ability to self-monitor, or control impulsive behaviors. As with all skills, some people's EF skills are stronger than others and we develop them at different rates. The result is a need for various degrees of support and that’s what we offer. We coach and support students according to their specific needs as they apply to their own workloads & schedules.
