• Executive functioning skills, including working memory, focus, organization, and problem-solving, are critical cognitive abilities that underpin learning and daily tasks, and challenges in developing these skills can lead to difficulties in managing academic responsibilities and stress.

executive function: what is it?

Executive Functioning skills are some of the MOST important brain skills a human develops because learning cannot occur, in any domain or subject area, unless these skills have been developed. Critical skills, like working memory, focus, metacognition, flexibility, organization, planning, problem solving and perseverance are at the core of all learning. When students struggle to develop in these areas, doing simple tasks can seem almost impossible. Academic tasks are overwhelming because they require more than just understanding content. Managing the workloads, deadlines and the stress of balancing multiple classes is enough to cause meltdowns, behavioral outbursts and avoidant tendencies.

Children with executive functioning challenges are more likely to struggle behaviorally because there is a higher level of frustration, self-confidence is affected and they might lack the ability to self-monitor, or control impulsive behaviors. As with all skills, some people's EF skills are stronger than others and we develop them at different rates.  The result is a need for various degrees of support and that’s what we offer. We coach and support students according to their specific needs as they apply to their own workloads & schedules.

eF Coaching :

How We Deliver Coaching

At The Ms. B Key, we strongly believe that whenever possible, in-person coaching provides the most effective environment for students to build executive functioning skills. Because executive functioning challenges show up in a student’s everyday systems, routines, and physical spaces, coaching within the home environment allows us to work directly within the setting where students are expected to apply these skills most often.

We consistently find that students develop stronger follow-through and build systems more efficiently when coaching happens in the same environment where schoolwork, planning, organization, and daily routines naturally occur. Rather than practicing skills in isolation, students learn how to apply them in real time within their own schedules, materials, and routines.

For families seeking in-person support, we are most commonly able to provide coaching in Northern Bergen County, New Jersey, Rockland County, New York, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia.

That said, we have also successfully coached students virtually across the United States, from elementary school through college. Virtual coaching continues to be an excellent option for many students, and we have supported students on college campuses from coast to coast with strong results. While in-person coaching is often our preferred approach when geography allows, our priority is always providing the level of support that best fits each student’s needs and circumstances.
